Lee JeaHoon

Lee Jaehoon's paintings mainly express the surface texture of stones that are weathering over time. He has presented works in which monuments are filled with various symbols and bizarre icons against an unknown time and space as the background. While the artist's previous work expressed a critical point of view on the ideology that the society forces upon the individuals, the recent works, such as the 'Study for Gardening', presents a series of paintings applying the methodology of oriental painting. The artist's work can be divided into before and after 'Study for Gardening'. Whereas the artist dealt with the relationship of various powers in the relationship between individuals and society before 'Study for Gardening', works in through the series are more focused on plastic problems. The artist applies the methodology of painting and thought handed down for a long period of time to his work and composes his own unique world. At the same time, he presents paintings that use the mural style to compose symbolic images such as lines and letters. He aims to interpret the abstract image and representation methodology of oriental painting in his own way. The world view and formative principles of traditional landscape painting are decontextualized and adapted into the artist's individual formative principles to explore a new form of painting.
