Park Grim

Park Grim explores contemporary narratives and identity by appropriating the forms of traditional Buddhist painting. Based on personal experiences of self-loathing and identity confusion, the artist seeks to reveal the complex structure of the self by juxtaposing social media images with religious iconography. In particular, through the persona of 'tiger', he projects an incomplete being undergoing spiritual practice, along with an ego that falters amidst the pressures of society. The work is a process of dismantling dichotomous boundaries—such as tradition and modernity, and norms and desire—and visualizing the questions that lie between them. The artist reinterprets Korean traditions, which have been marginalized in the sphere of Western-centric views, using a modern visual language by combining them with elements of mass media. This endeavor, which densely combines the representational power of painting with a contemporary consciousness on important issues, is garnering attention as a key achievement poised to expand the horizons of Korean contemporary art.
