Kim Myungchan
For Kim Myungchan, painting is a 'place' where the artist's body and materials intertwine and commune with a slow breath. In order to distance himself from the modern trends which are obsessed with speed to the degree they alienate the essence, he captures profoundly personal and nostalgic beings onto steel plates using the airbrush method. Instead of abandoning the sense of reality, the artist constructs a modern painting experience by focusing on the process in which mechanical materials collide and blend with the artist's body. For him, the work is a defense against losing himself, as well as a journey of personal growth and maturation through the persistent continuation of the senses of life he wishes to hold onto. While maintaining the formal beauty of figurative painting, the artist attempts to expand into space by introducing installation elements. His work generates a unique sense of reality through the mingling of mechanical media and the artist's body while perpetuating the experimental ground for the constantly evolving contemporary painting.
